A Recipe for Busy Weeknights
The steak sandwich is essentially a sandwich made with steak, usually grilled or pan-fried, along with various toppings. The most basic version of the steak sandwich consists of a steak, bread, and condiments, such as mustard and mayonnaise.
Ingredients for a Delicious Twist
However, many variations of the dish exist, with additional toppings such as cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and bacon. The bread used for the sandwich can also vary, with some opting for a crusty baguette while others prefer a soft roll or sliced bread.
Australian Steak Sandwich
While the dish can be found throughout Australia, it is particularly popular in Victoria, with the town of Colac being known as the "Steak Sandwich Capital of Australia." Packed with juicy sirloin steak, caramelized onions, and fresh toppings, this sandwich will leave you satisfied and wanting more.
Wine and Beer Pairing
The light, refreshing taste of James Boag's Premium Lager beer works well with the richer flavor of a steak sandwich. A Cabernet Sauvignon is also a good choice, as its tannins can help to cut through the richness of the steak.
Pitfalls on Steak Sandwich
Steak selection: Choosing the right cut of meat is key to a delicious steak sandwich. Look for cuts that are tender and flavorful, such as sirloin or ribeye.
Cooking the steak: Getting the perfect cook on your steak can be tricky. You'll want to sear it on high heat to create a crispy crust while still maintaining it tender and juicy. Use a meat thermometer to check for your preferred doneness, see what our article has to offer Adding Flavor and Texture to ingredients with Searing.
Bread selection: Choose the right type of bread that complements the steak's flavor and texture. A Ciabatta or French baguette will provide a good balance of crunchy crust and soft crumb.
Toppings: The toppings can make or break the sandwich. Consider adding caramelized onions, mushrooms, or horseradish sauce for added flavor. Cheese is another great addition, but make sure it's melted evenly.
Assembly: The assembly of the sandwich is crucial. Layer the steak and toppings evenly throughout the sandwich so that each bite has the perfect balance of flavors. Be careful not to overload the sandwich, as this can make it difficult to eat.
